More than 100 big supermarkets at risk of closure

  • Date Posted: 5 days ago (around August 14, 2025)

  • Summary: Plans to raise business rates on properties with rateable values above £500,000 are jeopardising over 100 large supermarkets, including up to 50 Sainsbury’s and many Tesco, Asda, and Morrisons locations. The reform aims to reduce rates for smaller shops, but big retailers warn this could hollow out high streets and drag down footfall — affecting not just retail but also business events hosted in those venues or town centres.
